A dependable pocket joint begins before drilling: measure the real stock, coordinate the jig and bit, select the right screw, and clamp against movement.
Pocket-hole joinery uses an angled, counterbored hole and a purpose-made screw to pull two workpieces together. It is fast, accessible, and especially useful for face frames, cabinets, jigs, and furniture parts where the pocket can be placed out of sight.
Lesson 01
Understand the Pocket-Hole System
Drill guide: Holds the bit at the system's designed angle and locates the pocket relative to the edge.
Stepped drill bit: Cuts the pocket, screw-head shoulder, and pilot path in one operation.
Stop collar or depth control: Limits the bit so the pocket reaches the intended depth without breaking through the edge.
Pocket-hole screw: Uses a flat-bottom head that seats on the ledge instead of wedging the pocket apart. Its thread and coating are chosen for the material and environment.
Clamp: Holds stock in the jig while drilling and keeps the assembly faces flush while driving.
Long driver bit: Reaches the screw head through the angled pocket without rubbing the pocket wall.
Lesson 02
Coordinate Three Settings Before Drilling
1. Measure actual thickness
Nominal names are not measurements. A board sold as “one inch” is commonly about 3/4 inch thick after milling. Measure the workpiece where the pocket will be drilled, and check for variation along warped or rough stock.
2. Set the jig for that board
Adjust the drill-guide position, workpiece stop, or thickness selector exactly as the jig manual describes. The setting normally follows the piece receiving the pocket, but model-specific instructions control.
3. Set drilling depth
Position and lock the stop collar—or use the jig's automatic depth system—according to the same measured thickness. Confirm that the collar is secure and that the bit turns freely in the guide before starting the drill.

Select the Screw by Thickness, Material, and Location
Use actual thickness to choose length, wood density to choose thread, and the project's environment to choose corrosion resistance. Kreg's current general guidance provides this starting point; the exact jig manual or screw selector should confirm the choice.

Thread selection

Environment and corrosion
An indoor cabinet and an outdoor planter do not use the same screw coating. Use the manufacturer's indoor, damp-location, exterior, or treated-lumber recommendation. Do not assume a bright indoor screw is suitable for weather exposure or preservative-treated wood.

Drilling the pocket
Mark the hidden face and pocket locations. Avoid placing a pocket where the screw may collide with another fastener or emerge at an edge.
Clamp the stock securely in the jig. Confirm the bit, guide, and stop setting.
Start the drill before entering the guide. Use the speed recommended by the jig manufacturer and advance steadily without forcing.
For deeper pockets, withdraw as needed while spinning to clear chips and reduce heat.
Stop at the collar or depth control, then withdraw the spinning bit from the guide before releasing the trigger.
Assembling the joint
Bring the mating pieces together on a flat reference surface.
Use a face clamp, right-angle clamp, or fixture that resists the screw's tendency to shift the joint.
Drive with a drill/driver and a controlled clutch or speed setting. Stop when the flat screw head seats firmly; overtightening strips the pilot or crushes the pocket shoulder.
Inspect the show face and edge for breakthrough, bulging, or misalignment before repeating the setup.
Lesson 05
Design the Pocket's Location Before Assembly
Place pockets on the underside, inside, back, or another normally hidden face whenever the design allows. Visibility is only one concern: leave enough material around the pocket, keep screws away from future machining paths, and orient the joint so service loads do not simply pry it apart.
When a pocket remains visible
Use species-matched plugs made for the jig's pocket shape, installed according to the manufacturer's directions.
Trim with a flush-cut method that will not scar the surrounding face.
Sand the plug carefully, preserving the adjacent surface geometry.
Test the finish: plug end grain may absorb stain much darker than the board's face grain.
